FDC PLAYERS SELECTED TO PLAY FOOTBALL FOR ENGLAND
Six of the FDC players have recently been selected to play for the England Colleges Football national team 2010. England Colleges Football is the official national team for FE college based players, run in partnership by British Colleges Sport and The Football Association to develop students who are combining full-time studies in further education colleges with playing a high standard of football.
Late last year the selected students worked their way through a challenging trial system starting with phase one regional trials in October, progressing into a phase two competition in November and through to a phase three national team selection camp in December. The selected students completed their training weekend at the FA training ground in Lilleshall in January 2010.
Huntingdonshire Regional College students Ben Colmer, Mark Cox, James Freshwater and Jordan Gent (men’s squad) plus Jade Bell and Gemma Clare (women’s squad) will be playing their first national match of the season against Australia at AFC Telford on Thursday 4th February 2010.
“We are very proud of the achievements of all the players, not least because I expect all to succeed academically, with 3 of the selected players excelling in the classroom. I would personally like to praise the efforts of Jonathon Heathcote, Sophie Antonucci and in particular the work of Gary Brown, who took the HRC 1st XI to the last 16 of the National U18 Schools/Colleges Competition, and who continues to enjoy national success as the England National Colleges Coach.”
David Lutton
Curriculum Manager for Sport and Uniformed Public Services at Huntingdonshire Regional College.
